There is no doubt that links from other websites to your website is vital for an ecommerce business. It all filters down to the Google Page Rank. This is the Google tool that is used to determine how important a website is to people surfing the net.

Google will balance the number of links, the PR of the pages exchanging the links, the keyword similarities on the linked pages, how often the site is updated, and the number of hits a site receives. Two PR 4 sites sharing links between pages with 'small business' as the main keyword, will benefit more from a small business website with a PR4 and a private blog that discusses 'wealth building.'

Also, 100 links between a PR6 site and a PR4 site will increase the ranking of the second site faster than 100 000 links from a PR2 site and the same PR4 site.

This can all be a little confusing. Google's PR algorithm controls everything. The confusion comes from the fact that search engines cannot think. Both the PR4 'small business' site and the PR2 'wealth building' site can be helping small business owners improve their page promotion. However, search engines cannot read. If they don't see similar keywords, then they do not understand that the sites really do have similar content.

Building Links

The main problem with generating inbound links is the time needed to generate links. Even a strong link building campaign can take months to build a few thousand organic links. This brings up the question, should you buy links from other sites with high ranks?

The benefits are solid, if the link is in the right place. Some link buying services let the business owner pick what sites their links appear on, and which pages they appear on. This is the only type of 'static page' service to use.

Another service puts links on blogs. This type of service, like www.payu2blog.com and www.blogsvertise.com or www.payperpost.com let business owners pick the PR ranks, topics, and quality of blog, their links are posted on. Blogs have a benefit that static websites don't. First, blogs always put the link inside the content, hidden within keywords that the business owner chooses. This guarantees that the keywords at both sites match.

The second benefit is that blogs are pinged to blog search engines, and directories, every time the blogger posts a blog, or a comment is posted. This means that a single blog can be 'pinged' to the search engines daily, where a static web page is pinged every few months - if ever.

However, a static page that is linked to a blog will be 'crawled' every time the blog post is published and pinged.

Crawling Your Site

Many people buy links from PR4 to PR8 sites for no other reason than to have the search engines come and crawl the site. It doesn't matter if the link goes down, because the benefits have already been received. This is the best way to have a new website resolved by Google in a matter of hours, instead of weeks, or months.

Cost

Cost can be prohibitive. Some companies have a budget of $1million for blog advertising. However, a small company can get started for $1000. In fact, if the blog owner finds blogs with ads hidden among the posts, they can contact the blog owner and deal with them directly. A PR 2 or 3 blog will cost $5. A PR 4 - 5 will cost $10. A PR6+ can run as high as $100.

However, the traffic driven to your site by Google can easily offset the cost. Buying 10 links from 10 PR5 websites or blogs can result in 100 000 extra hits in a month, which can produce 1000 extra sales.

Link Farms

Whether you buy links on blogs or web sites, avoid link farms. These are sites that are in business to sell links. If the search engines find these sites they will ban them. This can result in your 1000 PR7 links disappearing - forever. It can take Google six months, or more, to apply new links to your website. This drops your page rank, and profits, for a few months.

Outbound linking

It is also important to remember to link from inside your website to similar sites. Google will count these links too. In the end, it is up to each individual business owner to decide whether they should build organic links, or invest in buying links.

I'm a stay at home mom and I have an in-home notary business. Well, actually it is a little more than just "notary" work, as I also walk borrowers through the process of signing their loan documents. I began by searching the net for any and everything I could find regarding notary publics and loan documents. It took months of research before I would even allow myself to start looking for clients and then a few more months to get up enough nerve to make those "cold contact" calls. But with each call, things became a little easier. I'll have to admit that sometimes I wish I took the easy way out and begged my friend for all the information, but I saw too many friendships end because of petty rivalry once business picked up, so I decided to start from scratch and learn everything I could. At first I was excited about this new venture, but when I learned that there were well over 72,000 notaries in the state of California alone I began to get really worried. I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for, but I knew it was out there somewhere. Eventually I began to hit pay day and all my efforts began to pay off. But I still felt pressure as I waited for clients to call for my services. Then one day, I got a taste of what it would be like to be gone all day and all night. I didn't get to see my babies (5 and 9) and by the time I got home, even my husband was in bed. That's when I realized that as much as I wanted this business to take off ground floor, I wanted to be a stay at home mommy more.

So, I sat down and re-evaluated what I wanted out of life. I realized that I wanted to be readily available for my kids and husband, but I also wanted a career I could call my own. So, I decided to continue to pursue this business, but do so on my own terms. I would only accept jobs that worked around my family life and I would not take more than two jobs in one day. Mystery shoppers are not all that mysterious, but they do have a cool name. They aren't detectives trying to solve a crime, and they don't wear obscure clothing and dark glasses. They don't carry spy equipment and they don't sneak around, like someone on the prowl. Instead, they walk around like any other "ordinary" shopper and shop.

Their goal is to shop without being so conspicuous that they are observed observing the store employees or store itself. They have a set criteria that must be followed, whether it be checking out the merchandise, observing the store clerks, tasting the quality of the food, or experiencing the dreaded "return of an item."

Mystery Shoppers are often on a deadline. Their job is to enter a store, restaurant, of other facility, follow their list of criteria and be out of the store without anyone becoming suspicious of their purpose. Sometimes they have to arrive at exactly 4 p.m. Other times, they have a window frame of 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. And other times, they are given a week in which to complete their assignment.

Mystery Shoppers must fill out questionnaires such as:

"How long did it take you to get seated?"

"How long did you wait for your food?"

"Was your food hot when it arrived?"

"When you walked into the store, how were you greeted?"

"Did you find everything easily and if not, when you asked for help, how were you helped?"

"Give a detailed account of what followed when you asked for the out of stock item."

"How many customers were in the stores and how were they being helped?"

"What did the bathrooms look like? Were they properly stocked and clean?"

"After handing the money to the clerk, what did he or she do with the money?"

"Were the advertised specials displayed according to the following standards?"

With so many questions, it can often be difficult to remember everything. Some Mystery Shoppers have come up with a little system to help them along the way...
Make extra copies of the questionnaires, so that after you have driven a few blocks away, you can fill in the information and not forget anything.
Take a friend or spouse along, they can observe what the clerk looks like while you concentrate on the purchase and return policy. This is a great way to take a friend out to lunch, free.
Bring a tape recorder with you, once you leave the store, hit the record button (hidden away in your purse) and commence talking... you can act like you are on the phone, or talking to your friend or child.

For the most part, nothing unusual happens when you do a mystery shop. It's simply like any other shopping day, only this time you are being paid. However, there was one experience that took a shopper by surprise. She was asked to observe an employee doing taste tests. As the shopper approached the employee, a rat jumped out from under one of the racks, onto a sample cart and began eating all the samples!

One shopper gave some words of wisdom. She said, "Some shoppers are so excited to get a free meal that they can't contain themselves and are easily overheard by waiters and waitresses. Others have wandering eyes that are unusual for a regular customer. If you don't want to be made, act like you would any other time you eat out."

The pay you ask? It's not a rags to riches job, but it can add money to that holiday savings account... it can even pay for those trips to the movie theatres with your kids. On average, the shops range from $5 to $20 per shop. Some shops pay for your time and reimburse for the meal you have eaten, while other shops simply reimburse for the meals you have eaten. I have even heard of stores paying customers a set $200 a month to shop their store once a week.

There is a saying, you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. That has been proved true many times over but for how long can you go on fooling yourself when it comes to business opportunities and home businesses?

The sales letter drops through your mailbox or the e-mail lands on your computer. It promises great wealth for the minimum of effort in an amazingly short time. So who do you think these letters are aimed at?

1. People who wish for some extra money
2. People who are basically lazy and do not want to work very hard
3. Impatient people who want results NOW!

Now take a look at any reasonably successful person you know. They did not just wish for extra cash, they actively pursued it. They may make their working life easier by delegating and out sourcing but in no way are they lazy. They don't work hard they work smart. Finally all successful people know that overnight success can take many years to achieve and they are prepared to work for the long term.

The stupid thing about many of these business opportunity offers is that somewhere in there is a basically good idea. A plan that could help build a profitable and lasting business. But what is not realistic is the picture that the writer paints of the time scale and how to achieve this goal.

You are not going to generate thousands of dollars working for half an hour a day. You are not going to get money coming in faster than you can count it from day one. Even as you send the money or credit card details you know in your heart of hearts it is not going to happen. But somewhere in the back of your mind you are just hoping that this time it might.

When the plan or e-book arrives you read it and most times that is it. You leave it at that and do nothing else. Or perhaps you have a half hearted attempt to make it work and then give up after a few setbacks within the first couple of weeks. Doers any of this sound familiar to you?

Now if you are going to make any business work there is one quality you will need and this is where fooling yourself comes in. Are you a quitter? No don't tell me I don't want to know, tell yourself. Do you have the determination to see something through once you have started? In other words do you have staying power?

The good news is that if you honestly say to yourself that you do have the staying power then there is no reason why you should not make a success of any workable business opportunity that you become involved in. On the other hand if you know that you are the sort of person who is going to give up at first setback, don't waste your money. Quitters don't win so why bother to enter the race.

But come on, quitters can become stayers if they put their minds too it. If you want success badly enough then you can achieve it. If you think that you might quit before you reach your goal here is a suggestion. Just make yourself a sign and pin it above your desk or workspace.
"Whatever happens, whatever setbacks I encounter-I will not Quit"
Look at it often and in time it will become a fact.

That way you will become a stayer and a winner instead of a drop out and a quitter.

The franchise world encapsulates almost every kind of home based business opportunity you can think of, through property management, recruitment, grass-cutting, tyre-fitting, sandwich-making, chipped paint removal, drain cleaning etc.

Should one possess certain skills or experience necessary for any particular franchise then it may well be advisable to push towards a franchise specialising in that area.

However, in my opinion, and put very simply indeed, franchises fall broadly into two main categories -- those that return a residual income and those that require a new piece of work to be carried out to gain any additional income.

This is not to say that in franchise opportunities that do return residual income that no work is required to maintain the customer base but that it is much easier to maintain, the cost is not prohibitive and continuous benefit is derived by the customer from maintaining the existing contract.

Additionally, if one of the reasons for choosing the franchise was to be working from home then this kind of defeats the purpose as all the practical work will have to be carried out away from home.

This is perhaps food for thought as many people searching for franchises often do not know the pertinent questions to ask or the correct way to go about the investigation.

Furthermore, eventualities such as illness or holidays need to be taken into consideration -- if the franchise is operating as a one or two man operation then a simple event such as those aforementioned could ruin the business's reputation.

Following on from this point, when one goes on holiday, it is nice to know that all the earnings during that period do not stop.

One can just imagine, for example, a customer waiting for two weeks to get their drains sorted -- I don't think so! What about if one is ill? Net result will be a lost customer and if the other contractor is good, maybe a permanently lost customer.

There is something else to bear in mind about this type of franchise opportunity, and I'm not picking on drain cleaning, it's just an example and very, very necessary. The hard facts of the matter are that the better the job done, the longer it should be before any repeat business is encountered again... points to mull over.

Having said all of this, the types of franchise that offer residual, repeat income may require greater or more excessive selling and marketing skills and this is an area notorious for putting the fears up for many people -- generally people don't like rejection or approaching a situation where they are trying to get something.

My own personal attitude to this is that we all sell ourselves every day whether we are lawyers, doctors, architects, accountants, franchise owners, mortgage brokers, or stock brokers. Think about it...

Thus, in summary, and I say this very generally, I would suggest that unless a particular skill is present or indeed a penchant for the franchise on offer exists and one is confident of his/her ability to speak to people and thus market a product/service well, then the easier option is to look for some kind of residual income producing franchise.

Ask questions first before you join an affiliate program. Do a little research about the choices of program that you intend to join into. Get some answers because they will be the deciding point of what you will be achieving later on.

Will it cost you anything to join? Most affiliate programs being offered today are absolutely free of charge. So why settle for those that charge you some dollars before joining.

When do they issue the commission checks? Every program is different. Some issue their checks once a month, every quarter, etc. Select the one that is suited to your payment time choice. Many affiliate programs are setting a minimum earned commission amount that an affiliate must meet or exceed in order for their checks to be issued.

What is the hit per sale ratio? This is the average number of hits to a banner or text link it takes to generate a sale based on all affiliate statistics. This factor is extremely important because this will tell you how much traffic you must generate before you can earn a commission from the sale.

How are referrals from an affiliate's site tracked and for how long do they remain in the system? You need to be confident on the program enough to track those people you refer from your site. This is the only way that you can credit for a sale. The period of time that those people stay in the system is also important. This is because some visitors do not buy initially but may want to return later to make the purchase. Know if you will still get credit for the sale if it is done some months from a certain day.

As you can see from the figures, you will now understand why the average sales amount and hit to sale ratio is important.

Receiving phone calls and emails is something I handle every day of every week. Individuals write to me often on the advice of programs they join, or from finding me in the search engines. They come to me for clarification on how to market and advertise online.

Often the case is that the person making contact has joined a program designed specifically to address the questions they are asking me. In the back of my brain, I'm often thinking, "What's not right with this scenario?"

A program - membership or otherwise - must have a few fundamentals to be considered legitimate online. It must give you something in return for you giving someone money. It's that simple. There must be an equitable exchange - information, software, products - something that says you are getting value for your money.

As you explore all your various choices online, when it comes to picking a membership (or product or service), ask yourself (at a minimum) these two questions:

1. What is the program giving you in return for your money?

2. Is there more to the program than just telling others about it?

Here's a typical scenario painted for me: I'm contacted only to find out the caller or emailer has no real idea about what they joined!

Sad but true. Somehow, somewhere along the lines of reading an action packed and powerful sales letter, the hunter forgot what he or she was hunting for - direction to help him or her build their own business online.

Conversely, the other scenario is the hunter had no intention of building a business. He or she was merely looking for an "easier road." Find something to promote and tell others. This creates a problem though, you are an affiliate only and not the owner of the membership or product.

But it doesn't stop there. The problem compounds itself because, in their rush to tell others, the hunter (who has by now become a membership member) skips straight to the "here's your affiliate url to give to others." No reading takes place, no educating oneself on the fine points of what the program (membership or not) is about.

Simply put... the details are completed avoided. It's not hard to pinpoint which category I'm talking or writing to... someone really wanting to make their dream of making money online a reality or someone hoping to get by on the bare minimum of knowledge.

If the allure of making money is the only reason for parting with your own, think it through carefully. If you're not one for researching so that at a minimum you can put your own carefully crafted advertisements together, and you think promoting it will be a walk in the park (and you don't have an active mailing list) your job will not be an easy one. Do-able only if you're willing to work very hard promoting something you know nothing about.

In a nutshell, you join programs and memberships, even those whose sole purpose appears to be making money just for spreading the word about it because you are smart enough to know that morally you have an obligation to find out what it is you will be telling others about. If you can't explain in a simple email or phone call what it is you've joined, you are not ready to share it with others. You can't sell what you don't know. People can sense the difference.

This will help you to structure your day much better and to reduce interruptions. Let's say one specific task takes 4 hours. This is a big one. So many people waste time checking their financial stats too often during the day. Unless you are monitoring a new PPC campaign or a new project website it is not necessary to check your stats every 15 minutes. In fact - check your stats twice a day. Do the first check in the morning. This gives you a good overview of how the day before went and it allows to investigate issues as they arise. Check them in the early afternoon to make sure things are still going as normal. if something is entirely wrong you can even talk to an account manager of an ad network to find out if there are tracking problems as an example. That should be more than sufficient. Everything else would be a waste of your time - time you can use to be more sufficient.

Things you don't like to do

Everyone has tasks he/she does not like to do. It is in the human nature that we face those tasks we don't like at all. But they still need to be done. These can be the most dragging tasks and they can undermine your efficiency and your success. By properly planning for these tasks you can avoid the loss of efficiency. Start of the day with something you like to do. Now make it a habit to do the tasks you don't like to do right after that, but do them before lunch. By following this rule you have the entire second half of the day for the stuff like to do. When we get tired from working later in the day it is much more difficult to motivate us to work on stuff we do not like. It is so much easier to motivate yourself for stuff you like to work on even if your are tired.

Make taking breaks a habit

Breaks are important for your health and your efficiency. It might look less an issue when you are in your 20's, but by making taking breaks a habit early on you maintain a healty lifestyle. Nothing hurts an Internet entrepreneur more than being sick. Depending on your business model your income will slide. You are also working on a computer all day and certain illnesses are work related to working with computers all day. Take a quick 10-15 minute breather every 2-3 hours. Stretch yourself, get some fresh air, train your eyes by looking at something in the distance. Think about something less work related.

When I first got started in network marketing, I was told to buy generic leads from lead vendors and start cold calling them weekly. Everyone has heard "The Trend is Your Friend". If you follow the trend you can make money. It doesn't matter if the trend is up or down, if you follow it, you will make money.

This is easier said than followed. If you're like me, you spend a great deal of time poring over charts and graphs trying to find a stock that is in a trend. I've used candle sticks, moving averages, and just about every other charting trick to try and identify where the trend is going. The secret is to try and find the trend when it is starting and follow it until it changes.

It looks so easy when you read about it in the book, but boy is it ever so hard to actually implement. I've even tried to design my own trading strategy using technical analysis. It is so easy with the charting software; you can do some back testing to try out your great theory that is going to set the world on its edge. I confess, one of the tricks I've tried was using the 10 day moving average crossing the 30 day moving average as a turning point. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

One thing that I've discovered is that what works for one person does not necessarily work for another. It comes down to temperament and discipline more than anything else. If you can follow a system, remained disciplined when everything is moving so fast, and have the temperament to face the losses that come your way, you can be successful trading in the stock market.

There are dozens of systems out there, some are better than others. You have to take the responsibility to research how the system works, learn the ins and outs of it. And then, you have to face the question, do I have what it takes to trade this way. You have to be honest with yourself, because if you aren't, you will lose your shirt.

Even the best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go awry. You have the perfect stock. The sector is blasting out of orbit. You find the options priced perfectly. You buy a group of call options and wham, the market tanks. Your options expire worthlessly.

It's happen to me more times than I care to remember. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will, it's only a matter of time. It is the nature of the beast that we are trying to tame.

There is just something about day trading that is so exciting. It just gets into your blood. Some days you can't wait for the market to open, so you can go forth and do battle with market. Other days, you just need to quit while you're ahead.

But if you have a couple of bad trades, it can really sour you on the whole trading game. This is when you just have to step back and take a look at it. Maybe, you just need to get away for a day or two. Relax, do something different. Your unconscious mind will work on the problem and when you come back, you will have a better outlook and can spot the trading opportunities faster than they can come at you.

I've learned the hard way, if I try and stay in the market when things are going bad, it just gets worse. You need to step back and relax, because tomorrow is another day. If you still have your trading capital you can keep in the game. If you lose all of your trading capital because you are being stubborn and not recognizing that things aren't working out, then it is your fault.
